Jeers: Sleeping with the Enemy
Jeers to My Own Worst Enemy for wasting a trio of talented actresses in its pilot.
Saffron Burrows has stolen scenes in everything from Deep Blue Sea to The Bank Job, but she was given only two brief bits as schizo secret agent Christian Slater's shrink (even Lorraine Bracco got more screen time on The Sopranos). Alfre Woodard, who was squandered on Desperate Housewives, mostly spouted exposition as Slater's handler — her only character touch seems to be that she sometimes walks with a cane. And Twin Peaks vet Madchen Amick is stuck with the thankless role of Slater's apparently oblivious wife.

It's like the writers spent so much time developing Slater's dual personalities that they forgot to give the other characters a single one.

Note to NBC: Don't Squander Alfre Woodard
Dear NBC:
I heard that Alfre Woodard has been cast to play Christian Slater's boss on My Own Worst Enemy this fall, and I am writing to make sure that you treat her in a manner befitting her status as one of her generation's best actresses - unlike some other network who shall remain nameless. True, she got an Emmy nomination out of her much-derided stint on Desperate Housewives, but not because the material was extra special! Yes, her steely demeanor and exacting stare are perfect to play an undercover bigwig. But I'm nervous. I mean, I haven't liked anything Slater has done since Heathers, and that was 1989! So you can understand my concern. Please take care of my Alfre. She certainly deserves it. Go rent Passion Fish and you'll see what I mean.
Thanks for listening.
Sincerely,
Mickey O'Connor
